I like reviewing gear. Unlike some reviewers, I don't have manufacturers sending me complimentary gear in exchange for reviews. And this is more than a gear-review blog.
I've been thinking of doing listening reviews for some of my favorite recordings, tying gear in and focusing on how the recording sounds compared to others. I also want to talk about music and philosophy. For example, Susan Oyama, in The Ontogeny of Information, proposes an alternative view to the prevailing interactionism and nature vs. nurture arguments about developmental systems such as embryo development. This is a more generally applicable idea that could be used to talk about how recorded music audio playback comes into being. For example, is all the musical information involved in the aound reproduction contained in the bits on a CD? Is it an interaction between the bits and the gear? Or is it something else? And this something else is where Oyama’s ideas come in.
Please comment with your suggestions! Happy listening 🎧!
It’s interesting to read your thoughts on audio equipment, but realistically, I’m probably not going to be buying any of those products anytime soon. Don’t stop! But throwing in some reviews of albums or just random philosophical musings on art probably would have a more immediate impact on my musical appreciation!
