for Greg
The above YouTube short is how I first heard about Klangphonics’ new single and EP, featuring the track “Ghost (Find Me Again).” I thought the teaser was mysterious, and I needed to hear more. Here’s the link:

The track starts with harmonious voices, spare synth and percussion, and then Anna Metko’s soft voice comes in, right away, with lyrics that may be a bit difficult to discern the first time but which project a mood effectively. After the first stanza, the deep bass drum kicks in, and there are swirling vocals that envelop the simpler core of the song. After the second stanza, percussion stops, and there is lots of aural space, Metko singing sparingly, and instruments coming back in gradually, with a subtle swell that culminates in a spoken line by Metko, over a background of silence. At this point, where are where the YouTube short begins. Even with the full context of the song, this part strikes me as holding mystery.
Klangphonics have a penchant for performing shorts, doing techno on mechanical equipment that is not originally purposed for musical performance, such as a pneumatic hammer used in a mine, or a power washer. These novelties provided my background to this track, and there is more beauty than humor here. I can’t help but do my own version of Metko’s standing-in-place dancing and swaying, as I listen and write.
Here are the lyrics as far as I’ve been able to transcribe them:
Ooooooh …
(Slowly/Floating?) they let themselves in.
Your home is going up in flames
You get lost in the heat
The fear of being burned out someday
Oh, it runs through your veins.
You already know that you’re loose
In the darkness, no way to see,
No way to see, no way to see
And if finally when you go out
I’ll try and find you again
Leave all your troubles in the ashes
It’s a skeleton of your broken home
(Find me again) Of your broken home [repeats]
It’s different now
And I’m lost in the dark
(Find me again) and I’m lost in the dark
(Find me again) I’m lost in the dark
We’re just lost in the dark
Find me again
Again
And again
Again
Again
Happy listening!
Awesome. I think this point about their use of tools and household artifacts as instruments was exactly right: "there is more beauty than humor here."
Thanks, Hans.
Perfect to keep me going a little longer with some writing tonight! You liked my post and I checked your column and found this. Thanks! 🙏🏻
