A public nuisance

Or, How Not to Play a Piano

While visiting a nature and science museum today, I found myself unable to escape the noise of a man banging on a piano. I saw a man in a security uniform walking down the stairs and wondered if the pianist had just been a visitor who took it upon himself to play the concert grand piano located in the main hall of the museum. Nope. It seems the pianist must have been invited.

I rarely have gone negative on this blog, but this is an instance of what is intended as a courtesy or as an attraction—similar to the blaring music in a bar or the countless televisions in bars and restaurants, or the music coming from above in the aisle of a supermarket—is a public nuisance. This man plays the piano the way a typist might type up a manuscript. There is zero musicality in what I heard today. I was grateful when he left. I was able to go back to listening to music on my headphones.
